Brian E. Miller, PhD

Brian E. Miller, PhD, is the Chief Executive Officer of Sovato, where he leads the company’s mission to scale remote surgery and procedure programs globally. He brings more than 25 years of experience in surgical robotics, digital health, and platform scaling.

Miller most recently served as Chief Digital Officer and Head of Digital and AI Strategy at Intuitive, where he drove the company’s digital transformation and identified opportunities to deliver clinical and operational value at scale.

Miller began his career in robotic surgery at Computer Motion, where he developed software for two of the earliest robotic surgical systems — AESOP and ZEUS. His career also traces back to the landmark Lindbergh Operation — the first transcontinental remote surgery performed between the U.S. and France. He joined Intuitive when the two companies merged in 2003 and over nearly two decades advanced from control systems engineer to Senior Vice President and General Manager, holding leadership roles across engineering, advanced development, and systems strategy.

Throughout his career, Miller has contributed to key innovations in robotic surgical systems and surgeon simulation, earning patents in tele-robotic motion control, 3D telestration, adaptive video streaming, video content searching, and virtual reality simulation for surgeon training.

Miller earned BS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Iowa State University, MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University with a focus on haptic interfaces and robotics, and participated in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
